The Quarterly "e-Finanse", number 1/2008

Dear Readers,
In a decision by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education announced in Communication no. 9 dated February 29, 2008 4 points were awarded for publications in ‘e-Finanse.’ I share this information with you with great satisfaction as it is a sign of recognition of the editors’ efforts to provide a high quality content published in a quarterly journal.
In the latest issue which I now present to you, there are three texts. Two of them are on banking, although they explore different issues. In the first, mgr D. Siudak discusses what’s involved in the periodic measurement of the performance of commercial banks in the context of creating value for their investors. This topic (known in the west as VBM - value-based management) has achieved for itself a growing audience in Poland as well and each attempt to present it in an innovative manner is greatly valued. Without a doubt, this article by D. Siudak is such an attempt, since it deals with the issue of relating the principles of VBM to banking and this has only been marginally treated by the literature to date.
That the forms of banking are dynamically changing, particularly in our times, we all know well. Today’s commercial bank hardly resembles those of a decade ago, shown most clearly by traditional bank services. Their range today is unusually wide and often don’t have much in common with a conventional understanding of banking. Mgr P. Skiba in his article introduces one of the new services – interest and exchange rate risk management for corporate bank clients. This type of presentation is highly valuable with regard to the frequent and intense changes affecting businesses which increase the risks they face.
The third article, whose author is mgr P. Oszytko, is a discussion devoted to the analysis of business performance using the DuPont method. While this tool is rather well known, the article has much to offer: it presents this tool in the context of a holding company. In these times of mergers and acquisitions, strategic couplings aiming to maintain or enhance competitive advantage while at the same time increasing the dimensions of the average global business, the focus of this type of article is without a doubt quite worthwhile.
I am convinced that the texts in this edition will be a source of useful knowledge and important inspiration.
Sincerely,
Andrzej Cwynar
Deputy editor-in-chief of ‘e-Finanse’
